Referee Training

Mason SAY is looking for referees aged 10 and up for the Spring 2021 season! Here is the training information for all referees. If you have any questions, please check our FAQ page FIRST. If you can't find the answer you are looking for, then send the question to Erin Kelley at [email protected] or through the Remind app.

STEP ONE: Join Remind!

Please visit the Referee tab on our website to join!

STEP TWO: Complete online training at https://www.saysoccer.org/onlinetraining

  • There are FIVE sections to the SAY Soccer Online Training. Please review all of these presentations BEFORE the in-person session.
  • You can complete the Knowledge Checks as many times as you need to--as most of these questions correlate to the test questions. Your goal is to eventually get a 100% on the Knowledge Checks.
  • Keep track of what questions you have about the rules, as they will be answered at the in-person class.

STEP THREE: Attend the in-person class

  • The FREE class will be at the Fleckenstein Park shelter on Saturday March 20, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The class is MANDATORY to become a referee at Mason SAY. Click HERE for the address
  • Bring your valid Concussion Certificate! This must be within the past 3 years.
  • If 18 or older, bring your valid SafeSport Certificate! This must be within the past 2 years.
  • Referees MUST bring their mask/face covering, a soccer whistle, and a writing utensil to the in-person class.
  • Referees are encouraged to bring red/yellow cards and a stopwatch, their referee uniform, and a drink/snack.
  • If you want to purchase a whistle and/or a paper book from Mason SAY, the cost is $10 for BOTH the paper book AND the whistle. You can pay with cash (exact change please) or a check made out to Mason SAY Soccer.
  • Please come prepared with any questions you had from the Online Training!
  • Face coverings will be worn when 6 feet social distancing cannot be maintained. Referees will be blowing a whistle during the in-person class, but will remain socially distanced from one another to keep everyone safe.
  • If you are unable to attend the in-person class, you may take a class at another SAY area/district and have your instructor send in course completion to our Referee Coordinator. Please contact Erin Kelley (see Board Members page) for more information!

STEP FOUR: Take the exam

After the in-person class, the link to take the exam will be posted on the Mason SAY website under the REFEREE tab. Further instructions will be provided on that page!

To referee WINGS or above, you must be 13 or older and complete the Intermediate Level Test (IL-1).

To referee PASSERS, you must be 11 or older and pass the Entry Level Test (EL-7). To referee older divisions, you must be 13 or older and pass the Intermediate Test.

If you want to referee Instructional ONLY, then the exam is not required for Mason SAY. All referees that are 10 years old will referee Instructional ONLY.
